Dan and Lucy

Dan’s interest in the horse business has always come from his love and passion for horses. His experience combined with his effective communication skills make him an exceptional instructor. Dan believes that “Riders with true empathy and understanding of their horses have the humility to go places in this sport”.

Dan was born in Montreal, Canada where he followed in his grandfather’s footsteps and began riding. A few years later he and his family moved to California and, as luck would have it, to a home near a stable. The horse crazy youngster spent nearly every waking moment at the stable. He started taking lessons and when he wasn’t riding he learned by watching others and reading.

At age 16 Dan rode for a sale barn and competed in PCHA shows. He studied genetics, advanced horse shoeing and applied conformation judging at Cal Poly University in Pomona, CA. While Dan was in college he ran his own horse training business, developed a competitive county level program, and competed at the “A” level on his own jumpers.

Dan worked as assistant trainer for Mark Mullen and Victor Hugo-Vidal in between running his own businesses. In 1991 he opened Silverstone Training Stable and developed a successful breeding program which produced an approved stallion who he took to the Open Jumper level, a PCHA Year End Hunter Breeding Champion, and many premium foals. Dan’s background in genetics helped him select mare that would produce the results he wanted. He was involved in all aspects of the breeding program from stallion handling to foaling. He also broke, trained and showed the youngsters. More recently he was managing partner and trainer of Elvenstar Show Stable where he took many students to National Championships in equitation and jumpers.

This variety of experience has made Dan a truly great all around horseman.
